About Se(e)quoia

Se(e)quoia?

This map was created as a citizen science project to map all giant sequoias in Cambridge (UK) initially, but hopefully it will grow to extend to the entirety of the British Isles over time. The name "Se(e)quoia" is of course a play of words, implying that this map is a place you can go to if you want to "see" "Sequoias". They are beautiful trees!

Giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum)

These gentle giants are the only extant species in the genus Sequoiadendron and native only to a few groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Sequoias are conifers with scale-like needles.

Identifying sequoias in the UK

Even the oldest sequoias in the UK are much younger than many of their native Californian counterparts.
